Rapé as a gift: how to choose something special

Nine gold rapé sample pouches with black labels and a round box, in front of a blurred green forest

In short

  • Only give rapé to an adult (18+) who chooses it for themselves.
  • Is the recipient unfamiliar with rapé? Then choose a sample set to discover it.
  • Do they already know rapé? Then a single bottle with a story makes a beautiful gift.
  • Also tell them where the rapé comes from. That makes it personal.

Imagine. It's December. You're looking for something for someone you love. Something thoughtful. Not just another thing from the pile. And then you think of rapé as a gift. A small golden pouch or a dark bottle. With an origin story you can retell.

I'm Kevin Lorenzini, ceremonial leader and founder of Purity Healing. Our rapé comes from a Huni Kuin village in Acre, in the Brazilian Amazon. In this blog, I'll help you choose something special. Calmly, and with respect for the tradition.

First this: only give rapé to adults

This is what I consider most important. Rapé is only for adults (18+). So never give it to anyone under 18.

And one more thing. Only give rapé to someone who chooses it for themselves. Rapé is a traditional plant preparation for ceremonial and spiritual use. It's not a joke or a surprise for someone who has no interest in it. Not sure? Then ask them first, in a lighthearted way.

Is the recipient pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking medication? Then rapé is not a good gift. If in doubt, advise the recipient to consult their doctor first. Read more in Using Rapé Safely.

For whom is rapé a beautiful gift?

Rapé suits people who are already searching. Perhaps the recipient meditates. Perhaps they do breathwork or attend ceremonies. Or perhaps they are fascinated by the Amazon and indigenous peoples.

For such people, rapé is more than a product. It is a moment of calm and mindfulness. Rapé has traditionally been used to relax, ground yourself, and deepen your focus.

Rapé as a gift: three questions before you choose

1. Does the recipient already know rapé?

Is rapé new to them? Then choose something to discover. Has the recipient been working with rapé for a while? Then you can choose more specifically.

2. Which strength is right?

Every Purity label indicates the strength, from 1 to 7. A higher strength is not better. It has a different character. Not sure? Then choose a milder variety or a sample set.

3. One variety or several?

A single bottle feels like a conscious choice. A sample set gives room to discover calmly what suits. Both make beautiful gifts.

Gift ideas: from discovering to deepening

For those just starting: Four Rapéh's

The Four Rapéh's sample set contains Rosa, Cacau, Tsunu, and Murici. Each variety comes in its own round box with a screw lid, containing 2 grams. A gentle start to discovering.

For those who already know rapé: Five Rapéh's

Five Rapéh's takes it a step further. It contains 7 Eva's, Caneleiro, Katsarau, Samaúma, and Mulateiro. Perfect for someone who already knows rapé a little and wants to explore further.

For the true explorer: Nine Rapéh's

Nine Rapéh's contains nine varieties. From the mild Rosa to Samaúma. This way, the recipient gets to know a large part of the collection. You can find all sample sets in the sample sets collection.

A single bottle with a story

Do you know which variety the recipient likes? Then choose a single bottle from the collection. The bottles come in 7, 7, and 15 grams. A few ideas:

  • Tsunu: made with the ash of a specific tree from Acre. Strength 5 out of 7.
  • Rosa: the mildest in the collection, strength 3 out of 7.
  • For those with a lot of experience: Murú or Buna Rao, both 7 out of 7.

Make it personal: tell the story

The most beautiful thing about this gift is the story. Include a card. Tell them where the rapé comes from.

From a Huni Kuin village in Acre. There, everything is made by hand, without machines. The leaves are dried and finely pounded. The sun further pulverizes them. Then everything goes through a large sieve. During the work, they sing and pray.

As soon as the rapé comes in, it goes directly into a dark bottle. This way, the prayers and chants remain captured in the bottle. Then the recipient opens it. Smells it. And immediately understands what you mean.

It is also a fair gift. The makers receive the price they ask. I never cut corners. And besides that, a portion of the proceeds goes back to the village. Read more about the makers in The Huni Kuin.

And the kuripe?

To use rapé yourself, you need a kuripe. That is a V-shaped pipe with which you administer rapé to yourself. Does the recipient already work with rapé? Then they often already have one. What a kuripe is and how to use it can be read in The kuripe: the pipe for rapé.

Tip: store your gift properly

Are you ordering well in advance? Then store the rapé properly until the moment of giving. Dry, dark, and at room temperature. So not in the refrigerator. Keep the bottle or box closed. When properly stored, rapé stays good for 12 to 24 months.

Finally

A thoughtful gift does not have to be big. A small pouch or a single bottle can say a lot. Especially if you tell the story. Choose carefully, choose for an adult who chooses it for themselves, and give it with love.
