Story

Veia de Pajé rapé: a masterpiece of the Huni Kuin

Strength: 5 out of 7. Character: traditional, jaguar-boa, sacred Huni blend.

You expect something heavy. The name sounds grand, and so does the story. And then you take it. It comes in gently. Super gently. Only then do you notice how deep it goes.

Veia de Pajé rapé is made by the Huni Kuin in Acre, in the Brazilian Amazon. Four plants, four special types of ash, in one blend. Kevin calls it a masterpiece of the Huni Kuin. It is one of the most refined blends in our assortment.

What does Veia de Pajé mean?

Veia is Portuguese for vein. Pajé is the word in Brazil for the man or woman who carries the knowledge of the plants and the rituals. Veia de Pajé therefore means: the vein of the pajé.

Imagine a vein. Something that runs deep in your body and connects everything. That is how this blend is constructed: four plants that together form one flow.

Rapé is pronounced as "ha-pé". That is why you also see the spelling hapé. It is a fine plant powder that the Huni Kuin traditionally use in ceremony and meditation.

What is in Veia de Pajé?

Veia de Pajé is a composition of four plants, with four special types of ash.

Tsunu

The base. The ash of the Tsunu tree, a tree that is as common in Acre as the oak is to us. Deep and aromatic.

Xipão

A rare plant. It grows on the trunks of palm trees, in the Amazon region. Especially in the area of the Huni Kuin in Acre. You rarely encounter it in rapé.

Cacao

Cacao from the forest. The same plant that is also the base of our Cacau rapé.

Katsaral

A plant that resembles the Tsunu. Rapé Katsarau is also made from it.

By hand, without machines

Everything is made by hand. Drying, finely pounding, letting it pulverize in the sun, and sifting it through a large sieve. During the work, songs are sung and prayers are offered.

Rapé you see elsewhere is often coarser and grainier. Veia de Pajé is super fine, almost powdery. Perhaps that is part of the secret why it comes in so gently.

Directly from Acre

Kevin has had a connection with a Huni Kuin village in Acre for about eight years. There is contact every day, via WhatsApp and video calls. From them, he learns which plants go into which blend. Going to the village is at the top of his list.

The rapé comes directly from them, without intermediaries. In small batches, fresh almost every month. Kevin does the final check. Then the rapé goes directly into a dark bottle that blocks uv-light, so that the prayers and songs remain captured inside.

The Huni Kuin are also called Kaxinawá. They themselves choose the name Huni Kuin, "the True People". So do we.

"They get the price they ask. I never haggle. And besides that, a part of the proceeds goes back to the village." — Kevin

How do people experience Veia de Pajé?

The first thing people say: it is gentler than expected. No slap. No struggle. It slides in.

Then it becomes quiet. Many people describe an experience that slowly gets deeper. As if layer after layer opens up. Body, mind, feeling: everything seems to participate, at the same time.

Many people talk about clarity. About insights that do not come forced, but that are suddenly there. And about the feeling that they are touching something old, something from the tradition where the blend comes from.

This is how many people experience Veia de Pajé

  • A gentle start, without struggle
  • An experience that slowly gets deeper
  • Clarity and insight that come by themselves
  • A feeling of connection with the tradition

This is experience, not a promise. Everyone experiences rapé differently.

Using Veia de Pajé rapé

Rapé is something you work with, not something you just take. Start consciously.

  • Quantity: start with as much as a pea per nostril. Build up slowly, over multiple moments.
  • How: you give yourself rapé with a kuripe, a V-shaped pipe. First breathe out completely.
  • Order: in the tradition you start on the left (letting go) and then on the right (receiving).
  • Then: eyes closed, breathe through your mouth and sit still for a while. Let come what comes.

You can read more about the technique in "Using rapé safely".
