Story

Parika rapé: for those who want to see further

Strength: 5 out of 7. Character: sharp, focused, visionary.

Imagine this: you are sitting still. You have worked with rapé before. You know how to land, how to ground yourself, and how to find calm. And yet you feel: there is more. Something behind the silence.

That is where Parika begins. Parika rapé is made by the Huni Kuin, the largest indigenous people of the state of Acre in the Brazilian Amazon. It is a rapé for deep work. Not gentle, not subtle. Direct. That is why it is for those who already have experience.

What is Parika rapé?

Parika is a visionary rapé. It combines two things from the forest: the seeds of Anadenanthera and the ash of the Paricá tree. This combination has a long history in visionary rituals in the Amazon.

You will come across the name in many ways: Parika, Paricá, or Parica. It is all the same name. Please note: not every Parika is the same. Some contain only ash, others only seeds. Ours contains both.

Rapé is pronounced as "ha-pé". That is why you will also see the spelling hapé, and sometimes rapeh. It is a fine plant powder that the Huni Kuin have traditionally used in ceremony and meditation.

How Parika is made

The Huni Kuin make ash from the Paricá tree. This ash is ground very finely. Then the seeds of Anadenanthera are added.

Everything is done by hand. No machines. It is dried, pounded, and sifted. The sun does the rest. During the process, songs are sung and prayers are offered.

Rapé you see elsewhere is often coarser and grainier. Ours is superfine, almost powdery. That shows how much handwork goes into it. And because it is so fine, you need less of it.

Fresh from Acre, straight into the bottle

Almost every month a new shipment arrives, in small batches. Kevin does the final inspection. The rapé goes directly into a dark bottle that blocks uv-light. This keeps the prayers and songs trapped in the bottle. Open the bottle, and you can immediately smell how fresh it is.

Kevin has known the Huni Kuin for about eight years. He is in daily contact with a Huni Kuin village in Acre via WhatsApp and video calls. From them, he learns how rapé is made and how to recognize the plants. The rapé comes directly from them, without any middlemen. Going to the village is at the top of his list.

The Huni Kuin are also known as the Kaxinawá. They themselves choose the name Huni Kuin, "the True People". So do we.

"They get the price they ask. I never haggle. And besides, a portion of the proceeds goes back to the village." — Kevin

How do people experience Parika?

Parika comes on quickly. You feel it sharp and deep, in your nose and throughout your body. This intensity is not an afterthought. Many people experience it as a gateway: from ordinary thinking to something that reaches further.

What they describe: fixed thinking patterns loosen up for a moment. As if a layer falls away that you normally do not notice. Some see inner images. Others gain insights they did not expect. Rational thinking recedes. Space opens up for inner knowing.

Traditionally, Parika is used to seek connection with ancestors and guides. Some experience the sense of "I" becoming softer for a moment. Then space opens up for surrender.

The label also says "opening the third eye". See that as an image for your inner perception. Not as a promise.

Parika is not gentle. What you encounter reveals itself. Awareness often comes through confrontation.

In a safe setting

Using Parika rapé

Rapé is something you work with, not something you just take. Start consciously. With Parika, this is especially true: start with a very small amount.

  • Amount: start with as much as a pea per nostril. With Parika, preferably even less. Build up slowly, over several moments.
  • How: you give yourself rapé with a kuripe, a V-shaped pipe. First, breathe out completely.
  • Order: in the tradition, you start on the left (letting go) and then on the right (receiving).
  • Afterwards: close your eyes, breathe through your mouth, and sit still for a moment. Let what comes, come.
