A calm rapé ritual at home in 7 steps

In short

  • A ritual turns rapé into a conscious moment, not a habit in between other things.
  • Take your time: a quiet place, your breath, an honest intention.
  • Start small: about the size of a pea per nostril.
  • After blowing, stay seated for a while and close calmly.
  • Rapé is for adults only (18+).

Just imagine. It is evening. The house is quiet. Your phone is in another room. You sit on a cushion, with a candle in front of you. You open the dark bottle and smell the forest. Deep and earthy. Your shoulders already drop a little.

That is the start of a rapé ritual at home. No ceremony in the jungle. Just you, your breath and a plant with a long tradition.

I am Kevin Lorenzini, ceremony leader and founder of Purity Healing. For about eight years I have had a bond with a Huni Kuin village in Acre, in the Brazilian Amazon. In this blog I share seven simple steps. They help you turn rapé into a calm ritual.

Why a rapé ritual?

For the Huni Kuin, there is no such thing as "just taking some". You use rapé for a reason, with intention. It is a moment of attunement. With the plant, with yourself and with what is there.

You can do that at home too. The difference is not in the rapé. It is in how present you are. Hurried, between two appointments? Or calm and attentive? A ritual helps you choose the second. Every time.

Rapé ritual at home: 7 steps

1. Choose your moment

Choose a moment when you don't have to do anything. Not just before an appointment. Not when you are tired and rushed. Many people choose the morning, to start the day with attention. Others choose the evening, to close the day. Eat lightly beforehand and don't drink alcohol.

2. Prepare your space

Find a quiet place where nobody will disturb you. Put everything you need within reach:

  • your bottle of rapé and your kuripe;
  • a small, dry spoon or dish;
  • tissues and a glass of water;
  • a cushion or mat;
  • if you like, a candle, and a notebook with a pen.

Switch your phone off or to silent. Preferably leave it in another room.

3. Settle into your breath

Sit with a straight back. Let your shoulders drop. Relax your jaw. For a few minutes, breathe in calmly through your nose. Breathe out slowly through your mouth. Make the out-breath a little longer than the in-breath. Feel how your body makes contact with the ground.

4. Set your intention

Ask yourself: why am I sitting here? What do I want to let go of? What do I want to reflect on? Turn it into one short sentence. Honest, not pretty. Say it out loud or in silence. You can also write it down.

5. Open the bottle and take a little

Open the bottle calmly. Smell it. What do you smell? Wood, earth, ash, something sweet? Then take a small amount of rapé. About the size of a pea per nostril is enough. You can always take more, but never less. Use a dry spoon. Moisture is not good for your rapé.

6. Blow calmly, left and then right

Place the short end of your kuripe at your mouth. Gently place the other end at your nostril. Blow with one short, even out-breath. Not too hard. In the tradition you start on the left, for letting go. Then the right, for receiving. After blowing, breathe through your mouth.

Unsure about your breath? Practise without rapé first. You can read more about this in The art of blowing.

7. Stay seated and close calmly

Stay seated. Close your eyes if you like. Tears, a runny nose or feeling a little nauseous: that is often part of it. Don't fight it. Keep breathing through your mouth.

Many people notice that their head becomes quieter after a few minutes. Their attention sinks into their body. Take your time for that. Then drink a glass of water. Write down what you noticed. Close in your own way: with a thank you, a silent moment or blowing out the candle.

Which rapé for your first ritual?

Every blend has its own character and its own strength, from 1 to 7. It is shown on every label. Higher is not better. It is a different character.

Just starting out? Then Tsunu, Rosa and Murici are all three a good start. Rosa is the gentlest, with strength 3 out of 7. Would you like to get to know different blends first? Then start with a sample set. Or take the rapé guide.

Safe and with respect

Rapé is a traditional plant preparation for ceremonial and spiritual use. It is not a medicine and not a recreational product. All our products are for adults only (18+).

Are you pregnant, breastfeeding or taking medication? Then talk to your doctor first. Don't combine rapé with alcohol or drugs. Is this your first time? Then first read Using rapé safely. And preferably have someone guide you.

Frequently asked questions about a rapé ritual

How often do you do a rapé ritual?

There is no fixed rule for that. Listen to your body. Use rapé consciously and in moderation, and always with a reason.

Do I need an intention?

It does help. An intention gives your moment direction. Keep it short and honest. One sentence is enough.

What if I get tears or have to sneeze?

That is often part of it. Don't fight it. Keep breathing calmly through your mouth and have tissues ready.

Can I do a rapé ritual in the morning?

Yes. Many people choose the morning to start the day with attention. Others choose the evening. Choose a moment when you don't have to do anything.

Ready for your own ritual? Choose a rapé that suits you.
