Story

Caneleiro rapé: warmth that melts old patterns

Strength: 5 out of 7. Character: deeply grounding, balance, strength.

There are moments when your heart feels like a clenched fist. Tense. On guard. Ready for the worst. Caneleiro asks you to open that fist. Not with force, but with warmth.

Caneleiro rapé is made by the Huni Kuin in Acre, in the Brazilian Amazon. The base is Tsunu, the strong, grounding rapé. The ash of a second tree is added: Canela de Velho. Together they create a blend that grounds and warms at the same time.

What is Caneleiro rapé?

Caneleiro starts with Tsunu. That is the ash of the Tsunu tree, a tree that is as common in Acre as the oak is to us.

The Huni Kuin add the ash of the Canela de Velho tree to that base. The name sounds like cinnamon, and that is also true: canela is Portuguese for cinnamon. Yet it is not a cinnamon tree. The tree is named after cinnamon, but is a completely different species.

That warmth and spiciness is reflected in the character of the blend. Many people describe Caneleiro as warm and penetrating. Not enveloping, but in motion.

Rapé is pronounced as "ha-pé". That is why you also see the spelling hapé. It is a fine plant powder that the Huni Kuin have traditionally used in ceremony and meditation.

How Caneleiro is made

First, there is the ash of the Tsunu tree, ground very finely. Then the ash of Canela de Velho is added. Both are mixed by hand into one blend.

No machine is involved. What is added is dried, finely pounded, and further pulverized by the sun. Then everything goes through a large sieve. In the meantime, songs and prayers are offered.

Rapé you see elsewhere is often coarser and grainier. Our Caneleiro is super fine, almost powdery. That is how you can see how much handwork is involved.

From their hands to your bottle

Kevin has known the Huni Kuin for about eight years. With a Huni Kuin village in Acre, he has daily contact, via WhatsApp and video calls. They teach him how the blends are made and which tree goes into which one. Going to the village is at the top of his list.

The rapé comes directly from the village, without any middleman. In small batches, fresh almost every month. Kevin does the final check. Immediately after, the rapé goes into a dark bottle that blocks uv-light, so that the prayers and songs remain captured inside.

The Huni Kuin are also known as Kaxinawá. They themselves choose Huni Kuin, "the True People". So do we.

"They get the price they ask. I never haggle. And besides that, a part of the proceeds goes back to the village." — Kevin

How do people experience Caneleiro?

Imagine warm water flowing over ice. The ice does not break. It melts, slowly, from the edges inward. That is how many people describe Caneleiro.

Many people notice something in their chest in the first few minutes. A warmth that spreads. A feeling of opening up. What had been stuck for a long time is allowed to move again. Sometimes that is sadness. Sometimes love that had been bottled up. Sometimes just softness.

In tradition, Caneleiro is chosen when you are dealing with old patterns. Habits and reactions you have carried for years. Many people experience those patterns loosening, as if space is being created around them. That is an image from tradition and an experience, not a promise.

Afterward, many people feel more accessible. To themselves, and to others. The distance between thinking and feeling becomes smaller.

How many people experience Caneleiro

  • Warmth and softness around the heart
  • Space around old patterns, as if they are loosening
  • Deep grounding, thanks to the Tsunu base
  • More connection with yourself and with others

This is experience, not a promise. Everyone experiences rapé differently.

Who is Caneleiro rapé for?

Caneleiro is for those who feel that their heart has something to say. And who are willing to listen.

Your heart feels closed or heavy

Do you notice that you are closing yourself off? From people, from feelings, from life? Or do you carry sadness after a loss or a difficult period? Then many people choose Caneleiro. Cautious, but noticeable.

You are working on old patterns

Always the same reaction. The same wall. You see it, but it keeps coming back. Many people use Caneleiro for that inner work.

You are sensitive and no longer want to hide it

Many sensitive people learn early on to hide their feelings. Caneleiro invites you to let that go. Sensitivity is not a weakness.

You are opening a cacao ceremony

Start with Caneleiro, set your intention, and then move on to the liquid cacao. Many people experience that this combination goes deeper.

You already know Tsunu

Do you know Tsunu? Then Caneleiro feels familiar, with a warm layer on top. A logical next step.

When do you use Caneleiro?

For a conversation that matters

Half an hour to an hour beforehand. Many people notice that they are then more open and less defensive.

At the opening of a cacao ceremony

As a first step, to land and prepare your heart for the cacao.

When you notice that you are closing yourself off

After a period of distance, pressure, or sadness. Many people then use Caneleiro to return to their own warmth.

For inner work

During meditation, journaling, or breathwork around an old pattern. Set your intention, take the rapé, and give it time.

"Caneleiro moves people without them knowing why. Sometimes the tears flow immediately. Not from pain, but from recognition. If your heart has been waiting for permission to feel for a long time, this can be that permission."

Using Caneleiro rapé

Rapé is something you work with, not something you just take. Start consciously.

  • Amount: start with as much as a pea per nostril. Build up slowly, over several moments.
  • How: you give yourself rapé with a kuripe, a V-shaped pipe. Exhale completely first.
  • Order: in tradition you start on the left (letting go) and then on the right (receiving).
  • Afterward: close your eyes, breathe through your mouth, and sit still for a moment. Let what comes, come.

Frequently asked questions about Caneleiro rapé

Is there cinnamon in Caneleiro?

No, there is no real cinnamon in it. Caneleiro contains the ash of the Canela de Velho tree. That tree is named after cinnamon, but it is not a cinnamon tree. The base of the blend is Tsunu.

What is the difference between Caneleiro and Tsunu?

Caneleiro is Tsunu, with something extra: the ash of Canela de Velho. Because of that, the blend gets a warmer, spicier side. Both have strength 5 out of 7. Those who know Tsunu immediately recognize the grounding.

Is Caneleiro suitable if you are just starting?

Caneleiro has strength 5 out of 7. Many people start first with Tsunu, Rosa, or Murici, and then choose Caneleiro. Start with as much as a pea per nostril and build up slowly.

What if I have to cry?

That is allowed. Tears with Caneleiro occur more often. Nothing is wrong. Breathe calmly, stay seated, and let it be.

What is the difference with Rosa?

Rosa (strength 3 out of 7) is softer and more enveloping. Caneleiro (strength 5 out of 7) is warmer and more in motion. Many people choose Rosa to start cautiously, and Caneleiro when they want more motion.

Can I combine Caneleiro with cacao?

Yes. Many people use Caneleiro 20 to 30 minutes before the liquid cacao, with the same intention. First Caneleiro to open up, then the cacao. Do you want to keep it completely in cacao? Then also look at the Cacau rapé.

Is Caneleiro also for men?

Certainly. Working with your heart is not for one gender. Especially men who have learned to hide their feelings often tell about a deep experience with Caneleiro.
