Story
Murú rapé: strength that begins at the root
Strength: 7 out of 7. Character: strength, fire, deep grounding.
Some things don't go away with gentleness. You've tried it. Breathing slowly, being gentle with yourself. And yet it's still there. Then something is needed that begins at the root. Murú is such a blend. Not harsh. Not brutal. But unmistakably real.
Murú rapé is made by the Huni Kuin in Acre, in the Brazilian Amazon. It has a strength of 7 out of 7, the highest on our scale. Murú is for those who already know rapé and want to go a step deeper.
What is Murú rapé?
Imagine a palm tree with a trunk covered in long, black spikes. You can't just lean against it. It grows in the wet areas of the Amazon, along rivers and in low forest. That is the murumuru palm, Astrocaryum murumuru.
Maybe you know the name. Murumuru butter is in many shampoos and hair care products. That butter comes from the seeds of the same palm.
The Huni Kuin make the ash from this palm for Murú. And that's where the name also comes from: Murú is a shortening of murumuru. You see rapé under this name almost nowhere else. Are you searching for "muru rapé"? Then you're in the right place.
Rapé is pronounced as "ha-pé". That's why you also see the spelling hapé. It is a fine plant powder that the Huni Kuin traditionally use in ceremony and meditation.
How Murú is made
The ash of the murumuru palm is the base. Plants from the tradition are added to it. Not one plant does the work. It is an interplay, and the ratio is knowledge passed down by the Huni Kuin.
Everything is done by hand. Drying, finely pounding, letting it crumble in the sun, over a large sieve. Songs and prayers are offered during the work.
Rapé you see elsewhere is often coarser and grainier. Murú is super fine, almost powdery. With a blend of strength 7, that is no detail. You only need a little of it.
Directly sourced, and carefully controlled
The rapé comes directly from a Huni Kuin village in Acre, without intermediaries. Kevin has had a connection with this village for about eight years and speaks with them daily, via WhatsApp and video calls. Going to the village is at the top of his list.
Almost every month, a small, fresh shipment arrives. Kevin does the final check. After that, Murú goes directly into a dark bottle that blocks uv-light. This way, the prayers and songs remain captured inside.
The Huni Kuin are also called Kaxinawá. They themselves choose Huni Kuin, "the True People". So do we.
"They get the price they ask. I never haggle. And besides, a part of the proceeds goes back to the village." — Kevin
How do people experience Murú?
Murú comes in strong. You notice that immediately. Many people describe a warmth that starts low in the belly and slowly rises. Through the belly, to the chest. Like fire that is stoked from below.
What comes after that differs per person. Many people talk about a feeling of letting go. As if something that had been stuck for a long time comes into motion. Old patterns. A heaviness they have carried for years.
And then the moment after. Many people describe that as lighter. Not exhausted, but more spacious. As if you take off a heavy coat you have worn for far too long.
Murú is traditionally used to ground deeply. You stand with both feet on the ground again, with strength in your lower body.
How many people experience Murú
- Strength and fire, from the bottom up
- Deep grounding, with your feet firmly on the ground
- Movement in what has been stuck for a long time
- Afterwards: a light, spacious feeling inside
This is experience, not a promise. Everyone experiences rapé differently.
Who is Murú rapé for?
Murú is not a first introduction. It is a consciously chosen next step.
You already have experience with rapé
You have been working with types like Tsunu, Rosa, or Murici for a few months. You know how your body reacts. You know how to deal with a strong experience. Then Murú can be the next step.
You keep running into the same wall
The same situations. The same reactions. You are working on yourself, and yet it comes back. Many people then choose Murú, when they feel that it goes deeper.
You are coming out of a heavy period
Long hard work. Caring for someone. Losing something or someone. A lot has piled up. Many people use Murú to consciously let that go, with time and space afterwards.
You facilitate ceremonies yourself
Ceremonial leaders use Murú when they feel that someone wants to move more. Always with attention to the person and the moment.
Which rapé suits you? Take the choice guide
When do you use Murú?
When softer types do not go far enough
Tsunu, Rosa, or Caneleiro give you a lot. But you feel that something deeper is there. That is the moment for Murú for many people. Not as a first choice, but as a next step.
At the beginning of a period of inner work
As an opening, to set your intention for what is to come. Many people then experience Murú as a solid beginning.
When you have the time
Choose a moment when you don't have to go anywhere afterwards. A quiet place, an open evening. Murú asks for space, also for what comes after.
"Murú gives people what they had been looking for for a long time, but did not find in softer blends. I use it in ceremonies when I feel that there is something behind the facade that wants to move. It does not lie. And that is exactly its strength."
— Kevin Lorenzini, Purity Healing
Using Murú rapé
Rapé is something you work with, not something you just take. Start consciously. Murú has a strength of 7 out of 7. Therefore, take less than you are used to with other types.
- Quantity: start with as much as a pea per nostril. Build up slowly, over multiple moments.
- How: you give yourself rapé with a kuripe, a V-shaped pipe. Breathe out completely first.
- Order: in the tradition you start on the left (letting go) and then on the right (receiving).
- Afterwards: close your eyes, breathe through your mouth and sit still for a moment. Let what comes, come.
You can read more about the technique in "Using rapé safely".
