In short
- A kuripe is a V-shaped applicator with which you give yourself rapé.
- A kuripe is personal. You do not share it.
- Start with a little rapé and a slow, short exhale.
- Clean your kuripe after use and let it dry thoroughly.
- Rapé is for adults only (18+).
Imagine. You have your first bottle of rapé at home. You open it and smell the deep, earthy scent. And then you think: what now? For that, you need a kuripe. A small applicator, but the piece of equipment you will hold in your hand every time.
I am Kevin Lorenzini, ceremony leader and founder of Purity Healing. For about eight years now, I have had a connection with a Huni Kuin village in Acre, in the Brazilian Amazon. In this blog, I will tell you what a kuripe is, how to use it, and how to take good care of it.
What is a kuripe?
A kuripe is a V-shaped applicator for rapé. It consists of two tubes that meet at an angle. You hold one end to your mouth. You hold the other to your nostril. With a short, calm exhale, you blow the rapé into it.
With a kuripe, you give yourself rapé. So you do not need anyone else. That is why it is the first applicator many people buy.

Why a kuripe is personal
A kuripe touches your mouth, your breath, and your nose. That is why you use it only yourself. That is a matter of hygiene. But it is also part of the tradition.
Many people build a bond with their kuripe. You pick it up when you want to stand still for a moment. You feel the wood in your hand. After a while, it feels familiar, just like your own mug or your own meditation cushion. So treat it with respect.
Using a kuripe: how to do it
1. Take your time
Find a quiet place. Sit down with a straight back. Breathe in and out calmly a few times. Many people set an intention first. What do you want to let go of? What do you want to pause and reflect on?
2. A little rapé
Put a small amount of rapé in the end that goes to your nose. Are you just starting? Then take about the size of a pea. You can always take more, but never less.
3. Place it calmly
Place the short end at your mouth. Place the other end calmly at your nostril. Do not push it too deep inside.
4. One short exhale
Blow with a short, even exhale. Not too softly and not too hard. Then do the same on the other side. After that, sit quietly for a while and feel what happens.
Are you unsure about your breath? Then practice without rapé first. Blow through your kuripe onto the back of your hand and feel the airflow. You can read more about this in The art of blowing. Are you getting started for the first time? Then also read Using rapé safely.
Which kuripe suits you?
The material
Kuripes are often made of wood or bamboo. Hardwood is sturdy and lasts a long time. It feels earthy and solid. Because every wooden kuripe is made by hand, the grain is always different. No two are exactly the same.
The shape in your hand
A kuripe must fit well in your hand. The angle between the two tubes determines how it fits between your mouth and your nose. Choose one that feels calm when you hold it.
Plain or with an engraving
Some kuripes are completely plain. Others have an engraving, such as a frog or a hummingbird. For many people, such an image gives extra meaning to their moment. A hummingbird stands for lightness and attention in various traditions. Choose what touches you.
Cleaning and storing
A clean kuripe works better and stays beautiful longer. Here is how you do it:
- Blow it clean with air after use.
- Or use a small brush for the inside.
- Let it dry thoroughly afterwards.
- Store it in its own bag or box.
- Place it in a dry place, away from moisture.
By the way, the same applies to your rapé. Keep your bottle dry, dark, and at room temperature. Always close it tightly after use.
First the rapé: start calmly
A kuripe is only complete with rapé that suits you. Each type has its own character and its own strength, from 1 to 7. That strength is stated on every Purity label. Higher is not better. It is a different character.
Our rapé comes from the Huni Kuin. It is made by hand, without machines, while singing and praying. Because of this, it is super fine, almost powdery. It is precisely with a kuripe that you notice that difference.
Do you not know yet which type suits you? Then start with a sample set. It contains several types of 2 grams each, in their own round box. You can read more about the types in Rapé types explained.

For adults only (18+)
Rapé is a traditional plant-based preparation for ceremonial and spiritual use. It is not a medicine. All our products are only for adults (18+). Are you pregnant, breastfeeding, or using medications? Then consult your doctor first.
Finally
A kuripe is small. But you will hold it every time. Choose one that feels good, take good care of it, and take your time. Then it will become a permanent part of your ritual.
