Story
Mulateiro rapé: let go of what is no longer yours
Strength: 5 out of 7. Character: deeply grounding, resilience, vitality.
There is a tree in the Amazon that loses its bark every year. Not as a sign of weakness. As a sign of renewal. Layer after layer falls away. What remains is smooth, new, and shiny.
That is the Mulateiro. Mulateiro rapé is made by the Huni Kuin, the largest indigenous people of the state of Acre in the Brazilian Amazon. Its ash carries the same message as the tree: let go of what is no longer yours. Every layer that falls makes room for what is truly inside.
What is Mulateiro rapé?
Mulateiro rapé is a fine plant powder made from the ash of the Mulateiro tree. Its botanical name is Calycophyllum spruceanum. In Brazil, it is also called pau-mulato, in Peru capirona.
The tree stands out in the forest. Not because of its height, but because of its bark. It peels off in layers, like a snake shedding its skin. The peoples of the Amazon saw a clear message in this: what you no longer need, you cast off. Stop carrying what is not yours.
In tradition, the Mulateiro is also called "the tree of youth". That fits what you see: a new, smooth trunk every year.
Rapé is pronounced as "ha-pé". That is why you also see the spelling hapé, and sometimes rapeh. The Huni Kuin have traditionally used rapé in ceremony and meditation.
How Mulateiro is made
The Huni Kuin make ash from the Mulateiro with the intention of renewal: letting go of the old, so that the new can land. That ash is ground very finely. Everything is done by hand, without machines. What is added is dried and finely pounded. The sun further pulverizes it. Then everything goes through a large sieve. During the work, songs are sung and prayers are offered.
Rapé you see elsewhere is often coarser and grainier. Our Mulateiro is super fine, almost powdery. That is how you can see how much handwork is involved.
Small batches, bottled immediately
Almost every month a new shipment arrives, in small batches. Kevin does the final inspection. The rapé goes directly into a dark bottle that blocks uv-light. This way, the prayers and chants remain captured in the bottle. Open the bottle, and you can smell how fresh it is.
Kevin has known the Huni Kuin for about eight years. He has daily contact with a Huni Kuin village in Acre, via WhatsApp and video calls. The rapé comes directly from them, without intermediaries. Going to the village is at the top of his list.
The Huni Kuin are also called Kaxinawá. They themselves choose the name Huni Kuin, "the True People". So do we.
"They get the price they ask. I never haggle. And besides, a portion of the proceeds goes back to the village." — Kevin
How do people experience Mulateiro?
You know it: a thought you have been carrying for years. A way of thinking that always takes the same path. You know it can be different. But you don't see how.
Many people experience a clear silence with Mulateiro. Thinking becomes calmer, and that is exactly when insight comes. Not by thinking harder, but by not thinking for a moment. Patterns you otherwise do not see become visible.
Mulateiro is different from Tsunu. Many people experience Tsunu as quiet and grounding. Mulateiro also grounds, but additionally opens upwards. Colors seem richer. Your intuition seems sharper. Some call that their third eye, or simply: knowing without thinking.
And then the dreams. Many people use Mulateiro in the evening, when they are working with their dreams. They tell about dreams that are more vivid, and that they remember better.
What many people experience with Mulateiro
- A clear silence in which insight can come
- Old thinking patterns that become visible
- A sharper intuition, a clear look inward
- Vivid dreams that you remember better
This is experience, not a promise. Everyone experiences rapé differently.
Who is Mulateiro rapé for?
Mulateiro is for those who already have a foundation, and are ready for the next layer.
You already know Tsunu or Rosa and want to go deeper
Mulateiro is a logical next step. You know how rapé feels. You know how your body reacts. Now there is room for more.
You are creatively engaged
Writing, making music, designing. Many creative people experience that Mulateiro lets analytical thinking rest for a moment. Then there is room for ideas you cannot force. Right after your moment, write down what comes. It is clear, but fleeting.
You are working with your dreams
Do you keep a dream journal? Are you practicing lucid dreaming? Many people consciously use Mulateiro as part of their dream work.
You are at the beginning of something new
A new job, a new relationship, a new chapter. The tree that sheds its bark fits such a moment. Many people use Mulateiro as a ritual: letting go of the old and welcoming the new.
You have been doing inner work for a long time
You know yourself well, and yet you want to look further. Many people who have been meditating for years experience layers with Mulateiro that they otherwise find difficult to reach.

When do you use Mulateiro?
In the early evening, for dream work
About 2 to 3 hours before you go to sleep, not right before. Set an intention for your dream. Place pen and paper next to your bed. Write down immediately in the morning what you still remember.
For a creative session
Half an hour before you start writing, composing, or designing. Many people notice that thinking then gets in the way less.
When you are stuck on a question
You keep running into the same wall. Many people use Mulateiro then to look from a different angle.
During a transitional moment
Consciously, as a ritual, at the moment something ends and something new begins. To let go of what is past, and clearly see what is coming.
"Mulateiro always surprises people. They expect clarity and get depth. Not the clarity of a tidy table, but the clarity of a quiet night full of stars. Use it with a question. It wants to give direction."
— Kevin Lorenzini, Purity Healing

Frequently asked questions about Mulateiro rapé
Why is the Mulateiro called "the tree of youth"?
That is what it is called in tradition. The tree sheds its bark every year and afterwards stands smooth and new in the forest again. We tell that nickname as an image, not as a promise.
Is Mulateiro suitable for beginners?
Not as the very first choice. Start with Tsunu, Rosa, or Murici. Mulateiro has strength 5 out of 7 and is more active in character. Do you already know rapé a little? Then it is a nice next step.
When do I notice something about the dreams?
Many people notice it most when they use Mulateiro 2 to 3 hours before going to sleep. Set an intention for your dream beforehand. Write down immediately in the morning what you know, because dreams fade quickly.
Can I combine Mulateiro with Tsunu?
Yes, that is a classic combination. First Tsunu to land and become quiet. Then Mulateiro to go deeper. This way you have a solid foundation under you.
What if the dreams are too intense?
Take less, or use Mulateiro earlier in the day. Many people take Tsunu first to ground well. And save Mulateiro for moments that you consciously choose it for.
What is the difference between Mulateiro and Samaúma?
Many people experience Mulateiro as personal: insight, intuition, dreams. Samaúma (strength 6) they experience as greater: overview, heaven and earth, the ancestors. For many people, Mulateiro is a step on the way to Samaúma.
How quickly do I notice something from Mulateiro?
Many people notice the first things after 5 to 10 minutes. The strongest moment is often around 15 to 30 minutes. After that, there is often still a quiet glow for 1 to 2 hours. It differs per person and per moment.
